CREEPY CREATURE

Assignment:

For this major project, you will be tasked with concepting and modeling a scary / spooky / creepy creature using techniques discussed so far in class.  Specifically, you will begin by sketching and concepting your creature, sculpting it using Blender's sculpting tools, painting your creature using vertex painting mode, applying hair where necessary, and posing your creature using armatures .

Initial Sketches:

When thinking of creatures, I was inspired by food and everyday objects. However, my first four sketches weren't as spooky or creepy as I wanted them to be. I ended up sketching a final creature in the bottom right that I decided to use as my final design for my creature. This assignment was challenging because I normally don't do creepy things, so I still wanted to keep my creature colorful, but have alien-like qualities.

Process:

I started with a sphere and blocked out the head, arms, and tentacles for my creature by adding clay in the direction i wanted it.

After that, I used the sculpting tools to further refine my creature.

To finish my creature off, I added basic armature in the head, and body, but struggled with the main arms because they were massive and wouldn't scale down properly in size. This ended up causing them to stick out through my main mesh and didn't look nice or function how I was hoping.

I used vertex painting to add a lot more detail (I wanted a lot of my detail to come from the painting), added hair to enhance the tentacles (like you see on jellyfish) which i combed and colored to match the rest of my creature, and added a world.

I started by putting my creature in the ocean using a cube and the ocean modifier then added depth, but there were countless issues with lighting and rendering, so I scrapped that and chose the sky as my environment and added some clouds as steam/mist. Even though it has tentacles, I want it to seem like it came floating down from a spaceship and be the focal point.

Revisions

For revisions, I was able to remove the white thing that could be seen in the first video. It was a hidden object that showed up in my render. I also added hair dynamics and wind to my scene. Unfortunately, the wind didn't change how I set it to (I changed the strength to move between 1 and 6), but it seemed to stay at one level the entire time. I added a light to the center of my creature's chest because I think this fills the hole nicely. I made the light change color and intensity throughout the scene.

Finally, I redid my camera work so we get a close-up of the creature at the end and this also helped with the disappearing and reappearing parts (this only seemed to happen once in my redone video rather than throughout the whole thing). I also added some space music and a masked airplane window to see the mood one might feel if they were to see this creature while on an airplane.
