WEEK 6 PROGRESS
1. What were your goals for this week?
-
Get cotton muslin and make a sample of the overalls.
-
Design and print all markers and put them into one html file. Test the markers with A Frame boxes for now until I can get animations to work.
-
Follow up with Amy.
-
Email Caleigh to see if they can help.
-
Redo bioplastic recipe

2. What did you accomplish, please reflect on your time management. What worked or didn't?
This week I was able to finish the overalls sample, redo the bioplastic, and I met with Caleigh on Friday. I also followed up with Amy, but since I got help from Caleigh, I don't know if I need to meet with her. It could be nice to get feedback from her from a mentor's perspective, but she has not responded to my email. When it came to the markers, I ran out of ink on my printer, so I had to use very basic black and white ones. I've decided I'm going to design the markers once I finish the outfit so that everything will go nicely together.

3. How did you integrate feedback?
I was able to integrate feedback from Sasha when making the overalls. She suggested I use the cheapest fabric I can so I can get familiar with the pattern which was really great advice. When it came to the bioplastic, I added the sprinkles for coloring before pouring and they turned out much better than before.

4. What was unexpected / what lessons did you learn?
The biggest thing I learned is that A-Frame animations need to be simple. I wasn't able to use any of the animations I originally made because they used particle systems, bezier curves, and other things that can't be translated. I ended up redoing the water bottle animation and individually animated three water bottles as well as a bunch of flowers to replace the plant growing animation. This was so frustrating because I spent so much time on those animations and now they can't even be used. Also the more complex the animation, the longer it takes to load. Because of this, I had to keep them in separate files which is not exactly what I wanted. I might do more animations that are simpler moving forward to compensate for the lack of complex animations I originally wanted. Another thing that I learned was that with the pattern, I couldn't follow the instructions exactly because they used UK sizing and dimensions for the layout of the pattern. I just had to work around that and do what would work best. There were a few steps that were very complicated, but I ended up figuring it out.
Overalls Sample
Here are all progress photos of how I made the overalls using the pattern I purchased. This was the first time I had ever made a piece of clothing using this type of pattern from start to finish, so I'm very happy with how it came out.

Bioplastic Accessories
I followed the same recipe as last time but put the sprinkles down first for the aliens. For the moon and stars, I decided to try using natural food coloring. I opted for beets, turmeric powder, and blue spirulina powder. For the beets, I simmered them for 1 hour in a pot with boiling water and salt. I then removed the beets and was left with a vibrant liquid. For the powders, I mixed them with water until I got a homogeneous mixture. I used an eyedropper to add the coloring to the mold after filling it halfway with the bioplastic. I used a toothpick to move the coloring to where I wanted it. I will use the moon and stars instead of the aliens because I prefer the look and materials used to create them.

Animations and Markers
Because I had to simplify all of my animations, this is what I have for now. For the fire, I used an orange sphere as a placeholder and will be figuring something new out this week. The animations were going to take a while to render, so to save time I took a screen recording of Blender. I also included my new markers and QR codes below as well as some of the other ones I made and considered using. The ones I used for user testing are at the top. You can test the QR codes and markers on the webpage!
