MENTOR FEEDBACK

For mentor feedback, I met with Sasha DeKonick last Friday. I included this in my week 5 progress, so I'm reposting all of my notes from our meeting below:

Puffer Coat

  • A tefflon presser foot will make it easier to sew with plastic vinyl or put scotch tape on the bottom of my presser foot (then I don't have to use the tissue paper method)

  • The plastic vinyl is going to be very stiff and hold the shape it is sewn in

  • Add a few inches everywhere for allowance because when filled it's going to shrink a lot more than expected (speaking from her experience)

  • I don't need to line the inside with anything

  • Sew channels first then fill it

  • When stuffing, cut the plastic into strips so it's easier to move around and isn't as bulky

  • Another fabric alternative for the outside is mesh (still see through)

  • Secondary alternative is a recycled synthetic fabric since they are also made from plastics (might not be see through)

  • Look at organza and art parts for sheer fabrics

  • Things to consider for inspiration: Patagonia line from recycled plastic fabrics, water bottle plastics are fabric that can't be recycled (only used in fashion)

  • Look at speculative design projects to better understand framing and how to showcase my work

Overalls

  • Make a mockup with cheap cotton muslin from Joanns since it's my first time working with this pattern

  • Two options for putting it together

    • Sew all scraps together into a large piece first then cut out my pattern

    • Place scraps on pattern pieces and sew them on an inner lining

  • For the first option, I might have a few loose threads, but this makes more sense in the long run. However, i need to keep in mind what I will do with excess fabric and how I can minimize waste

  • I should line the inside with another piece of fabric to keep loose threads down

Bioplastic

  • Pour each layer with a different color

  • Use an eyedropper to add color after it's been poured into the molds

  • Use bioglitter

  • She thinks accessories are my strongest piece and have the strongest message attached to them

Other things to think about

  • Frame my project as someone ordering the clear puffer coat shell and filling it with their own scrap fabrics or old festival outfits for memories

  • Other materials aside from plastic...fill with old costumes and festival outfits that would get thrown away?

  • Potentially stuff it with outfits I wore

  • Sending the message of rave consumption culture through my pieces

  • Stay excited about the project and other people will react the same way!

Meeting with Hannah May

The second mentor I'm meeting with is Hannah May to get target audience feedback. I'm meeting with her 2/15 and plan on asking her advice for colors and materials when it comes to the overalls and puffer coat.

Hannah is a member of my target audience. I had an interview with her on 2/15 to ask her about the material choices for my puffer coat, overalls, and accessories to see if she had any insights on what I could use. She frequently attends concerts and festivals, so she was the perfect person to reach out to.

For the puffer coat, she liked the idea of filling it with plastics I've collected. I expressed concern about not having any colors, so she recommended colored vinyl instead of clear vinyl and/or putting stick-on vinyl over the clear plastic vinyl I already have so it doesn't go unused. I really like the idea of putting vinyl over the plastic I already have because I already own vinyl and I can put it in specific places so parts are still see-through. When it came to using mesh, she advised against it because mesh isn't waterproof and the inside of the coat could get ruined. However, filling it with plastic mesh from old groceries could help with the lack of color.

When it came to the overalls, she sent a screenshot to her friend while we were talking, and her friend said she would definitely wear them. They both loved the patchwork idea but recommended I either use fabrics that are all crazy patterns or only a few so they don't distract from one another. Also, if the puffer coat is going to be colorful, if I want the overalls to match, it's important everything goes together.

Finally, when it came to the bioplastic earrings, she thought they looked really cool. Although I won't be doing this, she suggested it could be cool to reuse plastics to create them and then cover them with vinyl.
